Competitors have been finding creative ways to try and get airborne during Tel Aviv’s third Red Bull Flugtag event.
Flugtag, which mean means ‘flight day’ in German was the brainchild of Red Bull owner Dietrich Mateschitz, with the first competition taking place in Vienna, Austria in 1991.
It is now held annually in over 35 cities around the world, with Tel Aviv’s event in its third year. Thirty two teams competed to build a craft capable of flying the furthest without the use of an engine.
Anyone is eligible to compete, but every flying machine must have a maximum wingspan of 30ft, a maximum weight, including pilot, of 450lbs and be powered by muscle, gravity or imagination.
The designs must be built entirely from environmentally friendly materials without any loose parts.
Entrants are judged on distance, creativity and showmanship, as each flying machine is launched, or often falls off the edge of a 30ft platform.
The record for the longest flight is 195ft (59.4m), set in 2000 at the Flugtag Austria event.
